Galaxy Note 6 Leaks Highlight Demand For Samsung's Powerful Phablet

Just as the Galaxy S7 family needs to find critical and commercial acclaim for Samsung, this year’s iteration of the Galaxy Note range needs to deliver for the South Korean company. Last year’s release of the Galaxy Note 5 stripped away many of the features that had brought the Note range a loyal fan base. As  details come out about the presumptively titled Galaxy Note 6, the demand for an impressive return to glory for the Note range is clear.

Last week saw details leak on the protection that the Galaxy Note 6 will carry. An IP68 rating will offer significant waterproofing and dustproofing to the device, and bringing it into line with the IP rating carried by the Galaxy S7 and the S7 Edge.

Although it looks like the details from CPU-Z’s benchmarking tools are not genuine, there is a huge amount of interest in a highly-specced Galaxy Note 6. The phablet will follow in the footsteps of the S7 family and a decision to sport the same Exynos 8890 chipset as the flagship smartphones announced earlier this year makes a lot of sense in light of Samsung’s commitment to leveraging economies of scale to reduce costs across its portfolio.

Although last year saw all of the the S6 family and the S5 Note using Exynos chips, previous years have seen a mix of Exynos and Qualcomm silicon inside the hardware. Given the S7 and S7 Edge are available with either Samsung’s own Exynos 8890 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 depending on the geographic territory, I’d be confident in expecting the Note 6 to offer a similar manufacturer mix.

Just as it does with leaks around Apple hardware, Taniyama-Shimura naturally applies here. The Note 6 devices are typically announced late in the third calendar quarter. Any leaked benchmarks or features are not going to be confirmed by Samsung, even if circumstantial evidence piles up and builds users’ expectations.

What is worth noting is the desire to see a powerful and fully featured Galaxy Note in 2016. The range has a lot of support in the community and each years’ release is seen by many power-users as the ‘ultimate’ Android devices. That halo slipped last year, but every indication so far is that Samsung is listening to the community and is ready to make amends to push the technology forward when the phablet is finally revealed.
