Facebook Executive Mike Vernal Departs For Sequoia

Facebook’s vice president of search, local and developer products Mike Vernal is leaving Facebook to join venture capital firm Sequoia Capital as an early-stage investor.

Vernal wrote about his departure in a Facebook post on Monday. He worked at Facebook for about eight years, reporting directly to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. He also worked on Facebook’s commerce tools. Facebook does not plan to replace Vernal and will distribute his responsibility among other managers. Recently, Vernal led Facebook’s efforts to expand search in an effort to make the flagship app a place users search for events and public information, not just social content such as photos with friends.

“It took me a while to really internalize the boldness of Mark’s vision… to get everyone on the Internet and to give them the power to share anything with anyone,” Vernal said in his post. “One of the most important things I’ve learned at Facebook is that a small team of people with vision and drive can change the world. Sequoia Capital has a long history of helping small teams create some of the most impactful companies in the world.”

Facebook’s recent push into live video could help the company grow as a search tool. The wide availability of live videos on anything from a political rally to a music festival or a funny scene could make users think about Facebook more as a hub for real-time information and sharing and boost the volume of searches. Last week, Facebook hosted its annual F8 developer conference where Zuckerberg presented his 10-year company vision, spanning topics from messaging and artificial intelligence to connectivity and virtual reality.

“Mike Vernal has been an integral part of the Facebook team,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. “While we’re sad to lose him, we’re happy for him to take the next step in his career and wish him all the best.”
