Uganda in social media blackout

Ugandans are in a social media blackout after the country's communication regulator on Wednesday instructed service providers to shut down social media.

In several text messages being sent to their customers, the service providers said they had been directed to disable all social media support until Thursday evening for security purposes.

This came hours after Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye was sworn in as the country's parallel president, a day before incumbent Yoweri Museveni's inauguration.

This is not the first time the country has shut down social media, the government had ordered a similar shut down in February during elections .
