Facebook to start charging users? Is the latest social media rumor true?

Every couple of years, a rumor begins spreading that Facebook will start charging its millions of users. And no matter how many times the giant social media site says it won't institute a membership fee, there are some who seem to believe it every time the rumor comes back.

The latest message goes something like this:

"It's official. Signed at 12:20. It even passed on TV. Facebook will start charging this summer. If you copy this to your wall your icon will turn blue and your Facebook will be free for you. Please pass this message, if not your icon will be deleted. P.S. this is serious, the icon will turn blue. It's official. Signed at 12:20. It even passed on TV. Facebook will start charging this summer. If you copy this to your wall your icon will turn blue and your Facebook will be free for you. Please pass this message, if not your icon will be deleted. P.S. this is serious, the icon will turn blue (Copy and paste to your wall)."

According to the post, Facebook will start charging $9.99 for gold membership services, $6.99 a month for silver service; $3.99 for bronze membership and – magically – free if you copy and paste the above status before "midnight" (no indication of which midnight, by the way.)
