Facebook Launches New Log-In, Quote Sharing, Save Tools; Translates Developer Docs Into 16 Languages

The number of developers building apps with Facebook’s developer tools globally has grown by more than 40% over the past year. At Facebook’s annual F8 conference on Tuesday, the social media giant unveiled a handful of new tools for developers that simplify user experiences and help ensure that growth stays strong.

For the first time, Facebook is giving app developers an option to let users log in to their apps with only their phone number or email address. The tool, called “Account Kit” eliminates the need for users to create passwords, which should make it easier for developers to get more people to sign in to their apps. Facebook’s login, which launched about eight years ago, is currently the most used single sign-on product, Facebook’s head of platform Deborah Liu said.

“People hate user names and passwords,” Liu said. “That’s why today we’re introducing ‘Account Kit.’ Anyone can use ‘Account Kit’ even without a Facebook account.”

Facebook cited the success of Indian digital music app  Saavn  using the new feature, noting that Saavn saw a 33% increase in total new sign-ins since it started using the simplified log in tool in tests.

Facebook is also expanding the insights developers can gather about their users through a new “People Insights” tab that will offer apps more anonymized data on users’  demographic information, such as gender and age. About 450,000 apps currently use app analytics, the company said. And to make it easier for developers to use Facebook’s tools, the social media giant announced it is translating its developer documents into 16 languages: Arabic, German, two variations of Spanish Spanish, French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Thai, Vietnamese and three variations of Chinese.  Facebooksaid more than 95% of the top 100 grossing iOS and Android apps in the U.S. are integrated with Facebook, along with more than 80% of the top apps in India, Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Brazil and Mexico. More than 80% of the approximately 70 developers Facebook partnered with for this year’s F8 launches and pilots are located outside of the U.S.
